John Amico Haircare is celebrating its 50th year anniversary! A successful family-run business, the brand sees a bright future ahead in product manufacturing, distribution and in beauty schools. “We are extremely proud to provide Diversion-free Professional Haircare products to more than 10,000 salon owners and stylists throughout the United States and we look forward to the next 50 years!” says Founder John Amico Sr.

Amico first started as a hair stylist and salon owner in the 1960s. He became a well-known guest and competition artist, winning awards around the United States and in Europe. In 1962, he developed his first two professional salon products, a shampoo and conditioner named “Competition.” Additionally, in 1962, he opened his first salon, called the “Pink Lady” and in 1965 his first beauty school.

In the early 1970s, Amico’s haircare product company grew and both his parents worked with him in the business. His father was an architect and in 1966 designed John’s first salon franchise and school, the John Amico School of Hair Design, while his mother did the company’s accounting. Amico’s wife, Elaine, was a hair stylist and is now the Vice President of the company. Amico’s five children all work in some aspect of the business. John Amico Jr. started working in the salon as a child and in 1978 at the age of 12 was working in the warehouse. He later attended beauty school and worked as a salon manager and in accounting. After receiving a degree in marketing from Bradley University, he received his MBA in finance from DePaul University and is now president of John Amico Products.

John Amico’s product collections have included items still popular today. One of the most notable is C.I.T., Curling Iron Texturing Spray, formulated not to stick to curling irons while providing great staying power even in humid conditions.

Through the years, the packaging also evolved. In 1974, Amico developed the “J’ami” brand, in 1984 the “Rainforest Collection” and in 1988 the “John Amico Haircare” brand. Today new custom packaging showcases the more than 500 items and 10 lines currently offered.

In addition, the company is also the exclusive U.S. distributor for Italian Jalyd Haircare products. The J Colour line allows for small inventories of 21 colors that have the potential to make more than 1,000 different colors. The offering also features Colorhead Haircolor, which is an organic NON-ammonia haircolor system, the BIO Organic Haircare line, the Jalyd Men’s haircare and skincare lines and Biominoil deep hair conditioning products plus a new edgy line from Italy called Folliap.

The most recent addition to the core line is Amico Amino Amplex which is a professional-only hair smoothing treatment that restores the amount of keratin lost while creating more. (According to John Amico, the product is formaldehyde-free.)

Amico concludes, “The power of the John Amico Product Company remains behind the chair. We sell direct to the salon with no middleman or distributor, allowing them direct communications and reduced costs with a wonderful opportunity to share in the profits.”

Amico also loves to be in the action at his school. Working with the future generation of professionals gives him the opportunity to give back to young people. For more John Amico product information, call 800-676-5264 or visit the website at www.johnamico.com.
