After receiving more than 1,200 online votes for her entry in the Sexy Hair My Sexy Style photo contest, stylist and winner Mabernis Morales got to experience what many in the industry only dream of doing—being part of a hair team for a New York Fashion Week runway show.

In love with hair since she was a little girl, Morales was determined to catch the judge’s eye with her entry. “I wanted it to be different, something that would stand out from all the other contestants,” says Morales. “I created a braid that went around the back of the head and looked like a basket. On the left side I made a roll out of the braid.”

The New York-based stylist from Salon AKS joined the team of 13 professional hair artists from across the U.S. to do hair for multi-talented fashion designer and international television personality Indashio’s Spring/Summer 2013 show titled “American Dream.”

Backstage at the show felt to Morales like one of her favorite TV shows, Jerseylicious. “It was crazy and lots of running around,” she says. “There were stylists with combs and hairsprays in their hands running after models trying to get everything perfect for the show. They were doing dreadlocks on a male model and I learned how to do them. I also got to meet the designer, Indashio, and that was awesome.”

Morales is looking forward to what the future holds. “I hope to be a part of more events like these in the future and hopefully one day work for Sexy Hair because they have an awesome team. I would love the be a part of it!”
