Mike Karg, famed cutter and shear designer, had one of the busiest booths at the most recent International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE) in Long Beach, California. He had just wrapped up a demo when the Modern team stopped by to check out his newest shears.
Karg "volunteered" (ok, we asked him) to help marry Modern editor Alison Shipley's new HALO extensions in to her natural hair. "It's important that you don't cut any of the natural hair," was echoed both before and during the process.
Karg points out that a stylist must place the fingers just below the natural hair and then cut in to the ends. "This way you can NOT cut any of the natural hair," he says. "Another tip is to not comb the hair but to break it up with your fingers. You want to go with the natural texture."
Karg then went from his thinning shears to the newest K-Curve shear to create the textured and natural ends to best blend the halo extension and Alison's naturally gorgeous and healthy hair. He masterfully switched from vertical to horizontal cutting to get the best out of the shears...and to provide a beautiful finish.
