Editor's Note: Talent ShowWho are you cheering for these days? Do you have favorites yet on American Idol or are you waiting for the new round of singers and judges on The Voice? Perhaps another genre of reality TV is more your passion, or you prefer to root for your favorite sports team—professional, college or local.

The singing show competitions are my guilty pleasure, I’ll admit. I’m also a pretty avid sports fan, but my favorite form of March Madness isn’t on the court. It kicks off at McCormick Place, in my hometown of Chicago, with America’s Beauty Show.

This year, we all have a bit more to cheer about than usual at this annual industry venue. In addition to meeting with stylists, salon owners and suppliers, and on top of applauding all the education, creativity and product innovations presented on The Runway, in workshops and on the exhibit show floor, I’ll be cheering for some very special talent being showcased during the opening night BeautyBASH happening Saturday night, March 9.

At this all-industry party, the winners of the 2013 Stars Photo Contest will be revealed, honoring some of the best new and emerging hairdressing talent. There will also be ovation-worthy presentations by industry icons, including “Xenon: Re-imagined,” a modern tribute to a legendary master of beauty show biz by Pivot Point’s Yolly ten Koppel.

What I’m most excited about, however, is that throughout the evening, we’ll be treated to proof positive that “beauty’s got talent” well beyond our traditional industry skills and artistry. We’ll enjoy performances by beauty pros showing off their creative talents beyond the salon, all selected from entrants in the first ABS Beauty Talent Showcase.

Simon Cowell won’t be there, but plenty of industry VIPS and top artists will, and all proceeds benefit the Cosmetologists Chicago Presidents Scholarship, a cause always worth cheering.

There will also be a preBASH event from 5-6 p.m., with an All-Star Panel hosted by Fabio Sementelli of Wella, with Q&A on trends, careers and education.

Tickets are $85 and include entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Register onsite at America’s Beauty Show or at americasbeautyshow.com.

I hope to see you there. You can tell me your favorite on American Idol, if you really prefer America’s Top Model or, better yet, the extra talent you plan to enter for next year’s BeautyBASH showcase. We and the entire MODERN team will see you on the show floor, too. If you can’t be there, watch for all our special updates on modernsalon.com and through our Facebook updates.

Cheers!
