How do I set color expectations if hair is too opaque or dark?

Q: How do you approach the canvas when it is too opaque or darker than the desired Level?

 

A: "Before promising anything, say 'Let’s see what your hair will allow,'" says Deborah Gavin, Keratin Complex International Artistic Director of Color. "This puts the responsibility on the existing color and what it will allow, rather than on you. If you aren’t sure if the client’s existing color will lift evenly, do a 3-minute test strand. Apply lightener to a slice in front, and process for 3-5 minutes. Wipe it off and see if the hair evenly lifted. Then have a conversation about realistic expectations. Create an action plan for how many visits the client needs to achieve the desired end result. Finally, set the client up for at-home success with the proper home care, and pre-book her."
