Clients with curls, coils and waves, require extra care to keep their color looking its best. Morgan Wilhite, creative director for Ouidad, breaks down these five common texture-related hair color problems. Arming yourself with this information will help you understand your client's texture and lead to an overall better color service.

Concern: Under processing

Cause: Textured hair is naturally drier and more porous, which may cause color not to process into the anticipated shade.

Concern: Streaky highlights

Cause: When foil highlighting, you must gauge the thickness of the weave for coloring or lightening to be in balance with the wave of the hair. If you use weaves that are too thin, the results gets lost in the waves. However, when the weaves are too thick, the results can look streaky and outdated.

Concern: Over processing

Cause: This is the direct result of stylists using too strong a developer, or over processing the lightening formula, which could potentially lead to breakage in areas.

Concern: Flat, dull looking color

Cause: Because textured hair lives in motion, a full color from roots to ends is not necessary to achieve a dimensional look. In fact, a subtle ombre highlighting, where the lighter color is applied more heavily to the midlengths and ends is better suited for textured tresses.

Concern: Dryness

Cause: Over processing the hair, and thus drying it out even further, will result in frizz caused by damage. Avoiding over processing is key for maintaining curly hair health and will ensure the client can recreate the salon look without the frizz factor.
