Covering gray while offering a fashion shade can be a challenge—but the new Goldwell Elumenated Naturals collection allows for this multi-tonal dimensional red with twists of warm and cool reflections.

Oftentimes, covering gray while trying to offer fashion shades is a big undertaking—but armed with Goldwell’s Elumenated Naturals shades, it’s a challenge colorist John C. Simpson is willing to take.

“This is about a radiant coverage rather than a brown coverage,” Simpson says about this color design for his prematurely gray model. “When covering gray while offering a fashion shade, the gray can become a browner version of itself and the color is sacrificed.”

To combat the problem, Goldwell has launched the new Elumenated Naturals shades designed to cover gray while maintaining the desired fashion shade, allowing a one-step color service with a multi-layered effect and coverage with tonal enhancement.

For this story, MODERN selected a natural, level-7 model with a singleprocess color design that had faded to red. She also had one inch of outgrowth.

“She is a young woman with premature gray,” Simpson says. “She is the perfect test model. She wants youthful fashion color but doesn’t want to see the grays or have them ‘peek through’ her color. She is looking for shine, luxury, expensive-looking red and high-fashion reflection. The target is gray coverage with soft interior accent. The color finish is a deeper red with panels of light.”
