Kimemily Pham (@excellenthairsalon), owner and master stylist at Excellent Hair Salon & Spa, Fremont, California, had a project. "This first time client has never colored her black hair in 33 years of existence," says Pham. "She wanted to go bold, coloring her hair a cherry red . We suggested to go darker at the root for low maintenance. With the assistance of my junior stylist, Lynn Huynh, we delivered exceptional result and met client's expectations."

Here Pham shares the HOW TO:

Starting level: 2 natural black

Working on damp hair, divide the hair from ear to ear.

Step 1: Start at the nape area woking toward the crown. Apply Matrix Light Master lightener + 20vl to zone 2 and 3. Feather up too zone 1 leaving out 2 inches at the root. Work in the same manner throughout the entire hair. Process for 15 minutes at room temperature.

Step 2: Rinse and shampoo. On damp hair, fill with Biosilk color 2oz 6rv+ 2oz 6ro+ 10vl developer. Process for 10 minutes. Shampoo with Tressa red shampoo in Crimson Splash. Dry hair.

Step 3: To the root apply Matrix Socolor 2oz 5rv+ 2oz 6rb+ 4oz 20vl creme developer. Feather into zone 2.  Then immediately apply CHI Chromashine in Red to zone 2 and 3. Process for 1 hour at room temperature.
