The next time a client requests an updated look, but is not comfortable with a radical change, think long, sexy layers. Adding layers is one of the easiest ways to update any look, building volume, texture and movement. Ruth Roche, artistic ambassador for Pureology Serious Colour Care, suggests slide cutting to create layers on the surface that are natural, loose and unstructured. This technique leaves the ends looking really loose and soft – perfect for making long hair look modern.

“Long layers create more action on the surface, so whether hair is worn wavy or smooth, there’s more personality,” explains Roche.

TIPS FOR CUTTING LAYERS:

1. Establish the perimeter length by using deep point cutting

2. Clip up the top in a horseshoe section and don’t cut it so it can fall over the base layers in back

3. Slide cut vertical sections from short to long

4. Use pie shaped sections on the top and sides, cutting short to long.
