The day culminates in a Gala Awards Dinner that honors outstanding teachers, as well as cosmetology students and their schools
Pivot Point’s day of teacher education featured Jamie Jones, Business Development Manager and Educator and Jason Russell, International Field Educator. The morning class with Jones and Russell focused on the “Four E’s” of Engagement that shared ‘learner-centered teaching strategies’. The afternoon segment with Russell was dedicated to “Salonability: Long Hair Design”, an ‘exploration of high fashion techniques that leave clients breathless’.
Thanking Teachers
Supercuts’ Gala Awards Dinner began with the coveted 2017 “Ultimate Teacher Awards”, a prestigious annual occasion when cosmetology instructors in the greater Los Angeles market are recognized and honored for ‘making a real difference’ in the lives of their students. What makes the occasion even more meaningful and memorable is that the teachers are nominated for awards by their former students who have gone on in their careers to become successful Supercuts stylists. Pivot Point’s Jamie Jones emceed this portion of the evening.
This year’s proud four teacher honorees and their nominating stylists were: Janice (Janny) M. Perondi, Woodruff Regional Occupational Center, Stockton, CA and her nominating stylist, Lilah Larkin of the Regis Corporation; Lori Hames, Riverside Community College and her nominating stylist, Aja Maneggio of Moreno Valley Supercuts; Mora Carter, Marinello Schools of Beauty and her nominating stylist, Simona Lutz of Lake Forest Supercuts; and Nick Rodriguez, Riverside Community College, and his nominating stylist, Stevi Zarate of Riverside Supercuts.
Winning Looks
The Gala Awards Dinner culminated in showcasing the talent of cosmetology students who took part in the 2017 SUPERSTYLE Photo Competition – themed “SUPER 60’S SUPERSUNDAY”. At the end, the top five winning student finalists and their schools were announced; the winning finalists and their models received cash prizes and an assortment of professional styling products and tools. The distinguished judges were Russell Mayes, hair designer and owner of Bauhaus Salon in Orange, CA; Anne Moratto, West Coast Beauty and Markets Editor, Modern Salon; Rhonda Ferree, a General Manager for GG Enterprises, and Kelleen Greenwald, a Regional Director for Regis Corporation. Pivot Point’s Jason Russell emceed this segment.

According to the proud 1st Place Winner, Ella Yi of Fullerton College, winning the 2017 SUPERSTYLE Photo Competition was ‘a joyous opportunity and a memory I will never forget’.
“I was so happy and excited to win … that night, I cried, smiled, and jumped around a lot on the stage with my model, Mako. I really enjoyed the whole team experience involved in this competition … working with my teachers and my fellow classmates developing content and other things. This was not just a win for me and Mako, but a win for Fullerton College and my whole team. I would like to also express my gratitude to my Mako – she was not just my model but my friend. She took time out of her schedule and was really giving and generous with her time. Without her, I would not have won the competition.”
Speaking for Supercuts of Los Angeles on the value to those entering the student competition and it’s changing annual theme was Cheryl Robinson, Owner of Sapphire Ventures, Inc., Greater Los Angeles Area: “At Supercuts, we believe that students should learn a diversity of cutting and styling techniques – from edgy, contemporary to classic looks. This better prepares them for the basics and the versatility of real-world salon styling. Our annual SUPERSTYLE Photo Competition with different styling themes gives them this practical experience while motivating them through peer competition.”
