In an industry dependent on the availability of water, Healthy Hairdresser reminds us that in 2018 663 million people still are living without a safe water supply close to home, according to the United Nations, which created World Water Day 25 years ago. The 2018 theme is “Nature for Water,” exploring how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.

Globally, more than 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. The UN is trying to lower that figure. “The opportunities from exploiting wastewater as a resource are enormous,” a statement reads. “Safely managed wastewater is an affordable and sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients and other recoverable materials.”

Every drop of water you can save, reuse or recycle demonstrates your empathy for this cause. If you hold an awareness event for World Water Day, you can list it at worldwaterday.org.
