After this ginger spice hair color received more than 8,000 likes on our Instagram feed, we knew we had to reach out to Houston-based artist Keelan Baker @keelanshaircouture to learn more about his inspiration and technique behind the look. Baker, who owns Shampu Salon in Midtown, specializes in color and haircuts, where 90% of the hair cut occurs with dry hair. He draws his inspiration from architecture, fashion and music and also spends time outside the salon as a DJ.

For this color, his client, Amanda, was a natural level 7/8 copper strawberry blonde with a bunch of classic highlights. This was her first time experiencing an all-over permanent color and this was the first time Baker had done her hair.

"We were looking for a richer more vibrant enhancement of her natural hair color, but wanted her to keep a dimensional look, as well," Baker says. "So after our consultation and discussing a variety of options and color tones I decided to go with L’Oréal majirel."

Bowl 1: 50 grams ( 7.4 )  5 grams of copper mix using 9 volume developer 1 1/2 ratio.

Bowl 2: 50 grams ( 6.45 ) + 5 grams of 6.46 using 9 volume developer 1 1/2 ratio.

"I went with 9 volume expecting it to fade since this was her first time trying this out and because her natural tones were lighter than the color i chose for her," Baker says. "If she ends up liking the color, I’ll probably use 20 volume next time for a more permanent look."

After he had created the custom tone, it was now time for me to apply the color. To diffuse some of the steaks in her hair from the previous highlights, he painted bowl 2 down about 6/8 inches and for the area around the nape he pulled it down further  Around the hairline he only painted 1-2 inches deep then painted the rest of bowl 1 on all the places he didn’t previously get. Her color then processed for 30 minutes. After the color was rinsed out , he finished with a copper glaze from Redken Shades EQ 20 grams 8c - 10 grams 7c - 20grams of clear, equal parts processing solution. That then processed fpr 15 minutes to give extra shine and pop to color. The final steps were to rinse/ shampoo and conditione with L’Oréal Series Expert Vitamino Color line. A cut and blowout completed the look.
