Liz Cook, a colorist from Scottsdale, Arizona, is best known for fantasy colors and balayage, but she can do a color correction like nobody’s business. Her audience loves to follow her for her beautiful photography skills and vibrant shades. MODERN first found her when we posted her maroon balayage melt at just two months out of beauty school. Her work and talent has since exploded.
Liz Cook
Cali&Co Beauty Lounge, Scottsdale, Arizona
Specialty: Fantasy colors, color corrections and balayage
Top-performing post: I had done a multi-dimensional red and copper balayage on my beautiful naturally red client. She let me have full freedom on her color, and I decided to take her ginger locks to the next level.
Favorite apps: Facetune 2 to blur backgrounds, general edit; Instasize for watermark and sizing; Split Pic for before and afters. I also use Canva, for my advertising and class posters.
I follow: @Aaashleee, @makeupbyfrances, @hairbydunsavannah, @jessicapowerspaints, @thejesjewel
Pro tip: I tend to make sure that my photos are taken against a calming, neutral and non-busy background, like a stucco building that is gray, white or off-white, a plain window background, or cinder block wall. My page is geared towards the client: meaning, the client has an easy Instagram page to navigate. It’s simple, straightforward and always leads them to making an appointment. I like to use hashtags that are local and easy to find (ex: #arizonahair, #arizonahairstylists, #scottsdalehair, #scottsdaleaz, etc.) and I always tag brands I use, along with general tags describing my color (ex: pinkhair, redhead, ginger hair, rainbowhair, etc).
Hidden talent: I can braid! I don’t usually showcase it, since I like to focus on color.
Fun fact: I love putting outfits together—I am known in my salon for being the fashionista of the group. Call me a shopaholic: I love finding good deals on great clothes and looking my best. I believe that when you look good, you feel good and you do good.
My audience follows me because: I definitely get more action with my fantasy colors. I believe people like to see the photography and vibrant colors. They also like to see the expressions on my clients.
How social media changed my life: Social media changed my life because it finally gave me the public platform to express my creativity. I love being able to share my creations with the world and be able to maintain my clientele all on one platform.
My first @modernsalon feature: I was first featured in November 2017. I did a maroon balayage melt, and I was only 2 months out of beauty school. When I was tagged, I was lying on my couch and started screaming. I was so honored I even printed it out so I could have it at my station. It gave me that extra push to go even further with my career.
