Vertical waves are so 2019! Here’s how Pureology Artistic Director Ashley Hofstrand @ashleyhoffy creates the newest, lived-in wave shape for 2020.
STEP 1: Mist a shoulder-grazing lob with Pureology Beach Waves Sugar Spray for cool texture as well as heat protection.
STEP 2: Insert iron horizontally into 1-inch vertical sections at eye or cheekbone level. If you are using a marcel iron, the handle will be on top.
STEP 3: Grab the ends of the hair and lift the ends up and behind the section.
STEP 4: Rotate the iron forward to make a half turn until the handle is on the bottom. Release section from this position.
STEP 5: When all waves are complete, mist with Pureology Wind Tossed Texture Spray for shine and texture.
Voila! Beach waves for a new decade.
A soft, beachy finish.
California-girl beach waves are here to stay, says Pureology Artistic Director Ashley Hofstrand @ashleyhoffy, and for good reason. “Cali Girl style is fun and flirty!” she says. “It’s uncomplicated and looks effortlessly styled.”
What is changing, however, is the shape of those waves. “We’re seeing more of a horizontal shape,” Hofstrand explains. “Traditionally we inserted our irons vertically and either wrapped the hair around the iron or put in a loose wave. Recently I’ve been using my iron horizontally to achieve a different texture.”

A couple of “must-have” products support Hofstrand’s new waves. She routinely reaches for Pureology Beach Waves Sugar Spray to create texture, and finishes with Pureology Wind Tossed Texture Spray for additional shine and texture. Another strategy that’s high on her list for producing the perfect finish on thicker hair is to combine Pureology Shine Bright Taming Serum with Pureology Mess It Up Texture Paste to encourage texture while discouraging frizz and flyaways once the waves are finished.
