Simplistic yet distinct Sultry, this has screen siren vibe, feminine but with undeniable strength. Think Lauren Bacall.

The Styling: Hair was prepped with a medium hold heat protective mousse & set in horizontal sections on a large barrel tong; loose & luxe was the desired result. When cool, the hair was brushed through, placed in a deep side part & encouraged into deep waves using a boar bristle brush. We finished with a spritz of gloss spray to help lessen fly-aways & draw light to the waves.

The Color: Starting with a totally natural level 6 base we pre-lightened roots to ends using Matrix Blur – a 5-15 minute one-step color adjuster that lifts hair one level & opens the cuticle.

This gave us a great platform for the beautiful blend of demi permanent reds & coppers from the ColorSync range also from Matrix, that we applied in alternating sections throughout the head.

The Cut & Style: An inch of tired & dehydrated ends were removed along with a little weight around the baseline just to allow the hair to move more freely when styled. I then added a heat resistant smoothing cream to control frizz & add polish. I then blow dried using a large round brush & pinned the sections until cool before brushing out & finishing with a soft hold workable hairspray.

The Color: Looking to replicate the rich nutty browns of the era I used a deep rich chocolate brown in a 4 level on the roots & mid-lengths into a level 5 golden brown for the ends. The Cut & Style: After adding long loose layers throughout the hair to remove some weight, I then prepped the hair with a strong hold heat protective mousse, dried using wrap blow-dry & paddle brush before using a medium barrel tong in a brickwork pattern & pinned until cool.

This look reminiscent of supermodels of the 90s like Helena Christensen & Christy Turlington & their still recognisable, androgynous crops. The Color: I kept the color simple choosing to let the shape have all the glory! I went in with a deep cool brown on the roots & added 10g of clear to the remaining mix to pull back on the depth of the color to create just a hint of light & shade on the ends. The Cut: Despite this beauty’s incredible bone structure & femininity, I wanted to invoke a decidedly boyish feel to the look leaving it square & narrow & not round it off in any way. I took the back & sides tight & square using scissor over comb, then starting at the crown using a square layer I moved through the top adding in point cutting to remove excess weight, producing this beautiful soft texture right through to the slightly lengthy fringe. The Styling: In this case less is more & natural movement is key. The style was dried softly using only a diffuser & my fingers, after adding a heat protective mid-strength texture spray. I then finished with a little spritz of shine spray to enhance the colour.

Discard: to get rid of or dismiss something as no longer useful or desirable

“There are times in life that we forget that something we now view as old, run-down or obsolete was once in its prime; a thing of beauty, iconic and something to be admired and cherished,” says stylist, salon owner and educator, Kerrie DiMattia, commenting on her inspiration for her photo collection, Discarded.

“I wanted to shoot in this old brewery in my hometown, not only because of the beauty and atmosphere that still exists there now despite its age, but also to remind myself of how alive with atmosphere it was in its day, and that life is a collection of beautiful moments in time.”

With over 39 years’ experience DiMattia’s has been active in photo shoot campaigns and working backstage at major events such as Sydney Fashion Week and Hair Expo. Originally from Sydney, she moved to the beautifully laid-back town of Grafton NSW in 1995 to be close to family. After 9 years of freelancing as a stylist, DiMattia opened her salon DiMattia & Co.

She has worked both internationally as a Guest Artist and member of Joico’s Australasian Design team, TIGI Creative team and most recently in 2019 joining Matrix Education, as a member of the Matrix Design Team

“The DISCARDED imagery has an editorial vibe, while the styling has just a hint of nostalgia - the focus is on classically beautiful hair that is uncomplicated, simple and authentic,” she concludes. “Whether we are talking about structures, possessions or people, the fact remains, we have a habit of casting aside or dismissing those that we perceive as past their prime when in fact what we should be doing is celebrating what was, and soaking up the culture, history and richness from the experience of days gone by.”
