HOW TO: Patrick McIvor Dip Dyes Dark HairPatrick McIvor, artistic and techniCulture director for Goldwell and KMS California, is a passionate colorist and educator. Always influenced by modern cultural and fashion influences, McIvor loves sharing his techniques and trends with other salon professionals, often via one of his other passions: social media.

McIvor recently developed a sure-fire technique for dip dying dark hair. Here’s how he gets the look with Goldwell Topchic Permanent Hair Color and Goldwell Elumen Hair Color.

Part hair from ear to ear and take a triangle section behind one ear.

Plan three to four sections. Back comb each section twice for a soft transition and don’t remove too much hair if the desired result is strong color.

Mix 5ml Topchic 12BM with 10 ml 12% lotion and apply to each section, placing a foil over the section to create a compact foiled area. Process for 45 minutes. Rinse, shampoo and condition hair with Goldwell DualSenses Hair Care.

Saturate hair with Elumen Prepare Spray, a pre-color treatment specifically designed to prepare hair for positively charged direct color dyes. Towel dry and lightly blow dry if needed.

Apply Elumen [email protected] to the bottom third of the section and feather Elumen [email protected] through the middle third. Repeat for each section.

Process at room temperature for 30 minutes, or for 20 minutes under an open hear source.
