As an intern for MODERN SALON MEDIA I’ve met many exciting people. On a recent shoot, I got a chance to meet with upcoming makeup artist Tad Greene. Like myself, Tad is just starting on his career and needed to get his foot in the door. Instead of sitting around hoping something would come his way he contacted his mentor, David Maderich. Shortly after getting a response, they were working side by side and David was helping to point him in the right direction for his career. Sometimes breaking into the industry can be a long and hard journey but if you contact the right people and never give up it will all be worth it in the end.

6 TIPS FOR FINDING A MENTOR

-Facebook, twitter, instagram and all other social media is a great way to see what industry icons are doing.

-Once you identify the contact, write a short email, don’t call! People are always busy and resent phone calls.

-Never give up! (Tad contacted 40 professional make up artists before hearing back from David)

-Introduce yourself to everyone you meet. Bonus points for having a business card.

-Know what you want to do in the industry. It makes it easier for people to help. Be SPECIFIC.

-Be persistent but NOT pushy! Don’t contact someone more than once every 2 weeks.

In this video we discuss not only how to find mentors, but how to launch a career whether it be hair or makeup.
