In this competition, Sebastian Professional challenges competitors to create “What’s Next” in hair.

Q. If a stylist or colorist is working on a limited budget but still wants to create a beautiful look, what advice would you give to them to make their entry stand out?

A: “The key is networking and planning,” says Rachel Carr, Sebastian Professional What’s Next Awards “New Talent/Student” Grand Prize Winner. “I began doing hair and make-up for photographers while I was still in cosmetology school. I made virtually no money during this time but my experiences and contacts were invaluable. I gained a reputation of being dependable and professional and now when I need help with entries, I have people who are eager to work with me for free or reduced rates.

It is also important to plan, plan, plan! Take control of the shoot. If the photographer is volunteering their time or working at a lower rate, don't expect them to also act as creative director or event coordinator. Think about the whole image: the lighting, props, backdrops, wardrobe, not just the hair. If you expect someone else to make these decisions, it might create confusion or frustration on the day of the shoot. Besides, it is hard to get what you want if you don't know what you want.”
