Daniel Roldan, New York editorial stylist and Matrix guest artist, demonstrates how he finished the sweet cut and color, "Haute Chocolate," in Modern's February issue.

"I'm creating beautiful but not overdone curl, with glamorous, full natural waves," he says.

1.Roldan cocktails a holding gel and a volumizer to create a mix that will add body and encourage movement during heat styling. 2.He works the mixture into the lengths; the top and fringe will remain smooth and flat.

3.Working with a paddle brush, Roldan blow dries the hair for curve, not curl. 4.Starting in the nape section, he wraps sections around a vertical jumbo curling iron.

5.To create clashing curl, he switches the wrapping direction from one section to another. He clips each curl at its base to allow it to cool. 6.Roldan uses the same curling technique in the crown section. He rolls the light side in one big wave to move off the face and sets the heavy side in clashing curls. The top and fringe remain uncurled.

7.Once all the curls have cooled, Roldan rakes through the lengths with his fingers to tumble the curls without relaxing them. He finishes with a holding spray.
