Forecast Spring '09

The tents of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week just dropped, but we were able to pull together some of our favorite looks from the first few days of the shows. The hair was better than ever! For Spring/Summer '09, fashion designers are creating beautiful clothing with a lot of interest in the front, leaving hair stylists a great opportunity to focus on the backs of the heads.

This is one of the most exciting and innovative designers at Fashion Week and it's no surprise Herchcovitch invited the innovative Omar Lopez for GHD to lead his show. Each braid was unique, twisting and spiraling up the back of each model's head. This structured elegance complemented the military-inspired fashion.

Odile Gilbert for Aveda created what she calls a "brain-like" bun at the back of the head, then covered it with either gold or silver leaf at the Rodarte show. "The idea was to create something very pure, simple and clean," said Gilbert. "I approached the hair like origami-carefully folding and wrapping the hair in circular motions, securing to the head and then covering with the leaf."

Allen Ruiz and Anthony Barrow for Avon Advance Techniques created interesting, heavy "naped" silhouettes on the Iodice runway. "These looks were designed to evoke the image of a beautiful aquatic woman emerging from the water," said Ruiz.
