In the nail department, Jan Arnold, co–founder of Creative Nail Design never ceases to amaze.  For those of you who don't know Jan, she is one of…if not THE…most fashionable members of our professional industry. Not only does she talk the talk, but walk the walk. She has a wardrobe overflowing with designer names and is willing to take fashion risks THAT ALWAYS SEEM TO WORK. She is tall and thin and a designers dream. After overseeing the nail creations backstage, Jan can be found sitting front row at most shows. She just looks right sitting there!

NY Fashion Week: COOL NAILS

This season Jan and Creative Nail Design did the nails for a record 55 shows including Luca Luca, Behnaz Sarafpour, Carolina Herrera, Heatherette, Phillip Lim and others. Jan does not take this responsibility lightly. Months before each season, the San Diego based Jan comes to NY to meet with designers and find out more about their looks for the upcoming season. She and her creative team then design nail creations to compliment the fashions. In past seasons we have seen cameos, Faberge eggs, daggers, piercings, 3-D flowers, church arches and "blood-drip" designs either painted or adhered to the nails gracing the runways.

Jan gets her inspiration from many places and readily acknowledges those that inspire her. She was particularly moved at a nail competition in Moscow when she met and saw the handiwork of nail tech Pchelina Nadezheda. The artist had created nail "badges" inspired by the Russian heraldic arms of the 18th–20th centuries. When Jan heard that the theme for the Baby Phat Show was "From Russia, With Love," she knew what she had to do. After her presentation, Baby Phat designer Kimora Lee Simmons begged Jan to "make it happen" for her show. The CND team went to work to hand create each badge, working for 48 hours straight…without sleep. Forty models sported the badges in what was heralded as one of the best shows of the season. We know why!
