For the past six weeks I have been visiting salons and asking stylists to show me their best updo work. I've seen braids, buns, twists, hair pieces, hair forms, flatirons, curling irons and more. Every stylist has used different techniques and tools to create a totally unique style, with one exception-hairspray. From Bumble and bumble's White Hair Powder spray to Redken's Fabricate to Aveda's Air Control, every stylist had her favorite and put it to work.
And contrary to my pre-updo beliefs, the hair spray was not just used to lacquer the final style into place. Sections of my hair were sprayed before being flatironed or curled or pinned in addition to using it for hold. And boy has hair spray come a loooong way. Remember the days of white flakes, sticky bangs and stiff strands? Gone! I have had at least a half a bottle of hair spray in my hair after some of these updos and have been able to comb it out the next day and be on my way (no shampooing necessary).
Here are a couple of my favorite looks so far(the one on the left is from Ruby Room in Chicago and the one on the right is from Avalon in Deer Park, Illinois). When all six stylists have completed their updos, we'll put them all up on modernsalon.com so you can vote! In the meantime, weigh in on my blog and answer this: What's your favorite hair spray and why?
