Currently, Hartley is Britain’s Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year and channels his creativity into trend collections that he forges, often in collaboration with equally passionate artists of his choice.
Hartley’s advice to hairdressers is, “Be open-minded, seek out diversity, find a great mentor, work hard and love what you do—every day.”
Hartley, like most artists, gets his inspiration from often-unlikely sources. His latest collection was influenced by designer Tom Ford’s movie, A Single Man, The film recreated 1960’s California and the style of that time with an idealized perfection.
“It (Tom Ford’s film, A Single Man) was all about beauty; every frame was flawless, showing an idealistic, purely perfect world. It made me think that as hairdressers, it’s what we try to do for our clients—create their ideal,” Hartley says.
This new collection of Hartley’s is simple, uncomplicated and monochromatic.
Hartley is in demand with many professional products manufacturers and created this collection for Davines.
