Only the most confident hair designers would be able to pull off men's groomer April Barton’s style of shaping hair. She does not stop moving while “rocking” around the client to powerful music like the latest track from The Rapture. She is fun to watch and, not surprisingly, her clients—including many male celebrities— love her.

The key to her success, though, goes beyond her strong yet fun personality. It’s her talent, taste and technique in hair design that make her so popular on set and in her Suite 303 Salon in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. After cutting a strong foundation, Barton goes through the hair to “distort” the shape through razoring, penciling, chipping and other shattering techniques. Clients line up to get an April Barton design.

MODERN had multiple models eager to be part of our exclusive session with Barton, where she demonstrates her triple threat of styling options to boost seasonal business: “Surfer Rock,” “Polished Punk,” and “Classic and Clean.” “It’s nice for the client to be presented with options,” Barton says. “It takes a lot of the pressure off both of you.”

Barton was recently retained by Paul Mitchell to collaborate on the launch of the new men’s line Mitch, which targets real style for every man—gifting you with your own triple threat: boost your service revenues, grooming and retail opportunities, and men’s-focused gifting and promotions to the women who sit in your chair every day.

“The Mitch line is a complete range that allows an artist to do anything,” says Barton. “It’s all a male client could want and all a hairdresser needs to style.”
