While visiting the Goldwell headquarters in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, Goldwell Artistic Master John Simpson was playing around with a mannequin head. When I asked if he could offer a TIP OF THE DAY, he said he had many! I pressed and he chose to demo his way on how to add shadow and detail with hair painting.

"It's about putting movement within the interior to showcase the design of the cut work," he says. "By using diagonal sections and veritcal diffusion, the colorist can create a brilliant design on a live canvas."

Product control and placement is key, says Simpson. "You can reduce weight, add length or create volume through color painting. This is a great technique."

In this video, Simpson demos his own version of baliage on a mannequin head. He puts the art and control in YOUR hands.
