Renews: Why Your Clients Need Their Omega-3s

September 28, 2012 | 6:43 AM

You may have heard that omega-3 fatty acids, typically found in fish like salmon and tuna, can help protect people against heart disease—but did you know that they can help improve skin as well? According to nutrition expert Dr. Joseph Mercola, a lack of essential omega-3s can lead to dry skin, dandruff, brittle nails, dry hair and cracked skin on heels or fingertips. Since omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties, they can decrease redness in the skin and promote quicker skin healing—a plus for your medispa clients. Today, it's easier than ever for your clients to get the benefits of omega-3s:

-Vegetables: Dark, leafy greens like spinach and broccoli contain alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is a type of omega-3. Docosahexanoic acid (DHA), another type of omega-3, is found in seaweed.

-Legumes: Several types of nuts and beans, especially walnuts and soybeans, are great sources of omega-3s.

-Seafood: DHA is found in oily cold-water fish, such as tuna, salmon, trout, herring, sardines, bass, swordfish, and mackerel. The American Heart Association recommends eating this type of fish twice per week.

-Meat/poultry: Many grocery stores now offer chicken fed with high-omega-3 foods, and eggs from similarly-fed chickens as well. Beef that has been "grass-fed" is also high in omega-3s since they consumed leafy greens instead of a grain-rich diet.

-Supplements: Fish oil and flaxseed oil are two of the best supplements for a diet rich in omega-3s.
