HOW TO: Transitioning To A More Natural Color

Kimemily Pham (@excellenthairsalon) of Fremont, California, keeps up with the trends, demands, and needs of her clients by taking private coloring and cutting classes, attending many hair, makeup, and skincare shows all over the states, watchng you tube and spending time on Instagram looking for inspiration. "I literally breath, eat, and sleep hair," she says. Client Jennifer, a first time client, arrived to the salon looking for something lighter and more natural. Here Pham shares how she handled the request:

BEFORE: Starting level 4, on previously colored hair with a 4 inch of outgrowth

FORMULA: Matrix Light Master Lightener, with alternated 20volume and 50volume + Olaplex

Step 1: Begin in the back, working forward. Balayage with a combination of freehand painting and fine thin weaves for a blended look.

Step 2: Process to level 8. Rinse, treat with Olaplex and dry the hair.

Step 3: Apply the base color:  Matrix Socolor 5AG + 5N 15volume

Step 4: Process for 10 minutes

Step 5: Tone with Kenra Demi color mid shaft leaving 3 inches ends out 7NA+ 9PV blended with 9 volume developer.

Step 6: Process for 10mins, then pulled through ends for 2mis
