Barbering Basics: Blending Direction and the Straight Razor Shave

Anne Moratto | December 18, 2014 | 10:40 AM

We found a lesson on the fundamentals of barbering on Instagram.  Dylan Johnson (@kid_ridiculous) of the Proper Barber Shop in Hollywood, CA, is  a UNITE/GO24.7 educator. This photo of his client shows (top) before a straight razor shave and (bottom) after a straight razor shave.  The big question was to blend up or down and here is his answer:

"I blend up," says Johnson. "I set my shave line first and blend from my trimmers up, first, so I don't have to go back and remove the razor line at the end.  The shave is the final step of the service everytime. It's cleaner that way and you can see its shape as you work your way up the head."
