Melanie Shields (@melaniekshields), an artist at Colours Salon, Kahului, on Maui in Hawaii, tagged us with this amazing makeover and we just had to know more.

"My guest had permanent black hair color about 1 1/2 inches away from the scalp," says Shields. "Her ends were overly lightened and very fragile. She has lots of breakage underneath so I needed to be very careful not to create any more breakage (thank you Olaplex!). She wanted to slightly lighten her base color and darken the ends."

Here Shields shares the HOW TO:

FORMULAS USED:

A) Equal parts 55/0+5/1+20v Wella Koleston Perfect

B) Wella freelights lightener + 20v + Olaplex

C) 9/3+1.9% Wella Color Touch

D) (1 oz) 7/73+ (1 oz) 7/7+(1/2 oz) 6/77+1.9% Wella Color Touch

E) Equal parts 7/7+6/77+1.9%

Step 1: Apply formula A as a retouch.

Step 2: Starting at the nape, take 1/4 of an inch horizontal sections and apply formula B on the previous black hair color. Feather up into retouch color and where necessary.

Step 3: Apply formula C on the ends at the same time. Separate each section with plastic wrap.

Step 4: Process for about 30 minutes (until midshaft reached goal level).

Step 5: After rinsing, towel dry and apply formula D for 15-20 minutes. (Color was not exactly what I wanted) Rinse. Towel dry.

Step 6: Apply formula E for 15-20 minutes. Finish with Olaplex #2.
