Emily Johnson (@eljohnson14) of Southern Roots Salon & Spa, Chattanooga, TN, had an opportunity to have fun with a fun client. "She loves anything funky," says Johnson,  "and really wanted to get into the new granny hair trend."

Before coloring, Johnson created an undercut using clippers and a #3 guard.

Here she shares the color HOW TO:

Step 1: Lighten regrowth with Redken Flash Lift and 20 volume developer.

Step 2: Lighten the ends with Redken Flash Lift and 40 volume developer (blended with a bond builder to lower the volume to 30 volume).

Step 3: Process for 35 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Towel dry.

Step 4: Tone at the shampoo bowl with Redken Shades 9t with it's own processing solution. Process for 5 minutes and then apply a bond builder for 5 minutes. Shampoo and condition the hair. Blow dry.

Step 5: To achieve the gray, apply Kenra 8SM with 10 volume developer. The strands below the occipital were colored with Pravana 4N.

Step 6: Process for the maximum time: 40 minutes.

"I was so pleased with the results in one service!! Approximately 3 1/2 hours later she had gray hair!"
