Braids remain a popular look both for casual, everyday wear and for formal events, but the typical French or fishtail looks are starting to get old. For a fresh take, try a rope braid like the one worn by Nina Dobrev at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards. With lots of volume at the crown and side-swept bangs, Dobrev’s look is both youthful and sophisticated. Here Pureology Artist Sandra Joseph shares her steps to creating this easy updo.

Twisted Rope Braid How-To

1. On damp hair, apply Pureology Smooth Perfection Shaping Control Gel (launching this September) evenly from roots to tips. Blowdry with a medium round brush, creating shape and volume.

2. Gather all the lengths to the side and divide into two sections. Allow pieces around the face to fall out.

3. Apply Pureology Colour Stylist Anti Breakage Twist shine texturizer to both sections for added texture and definition.

4. With a section of hair in each hand, twist both sections to the right until all the hair is twisted, creating two strands of twisted hair.

5. Cross the right strand over the left strand and continue this pattern until you achieve a rope braid.

6. To lock the braids together, tease the ends then secure with an elastic. Finish with Colour Stylist Supreme Control high-hold hair spray for color treated hair for an all-day hold.

TIP: For a beautiful evening look, wrap braid into a bun and secure with pins.
