“The History of Hair,” was the theme of John Amico Haircare’s 38th annual Chicago, Chicago convention, held September 20-21 at the Hilton Hotel in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Generations of hairstyles from the 1920s to the present day were celebrated with a runway presentation, along with demonstrations by platform artists from around the world.

This yearly event is a chance for the John Amico School of Hair Design’s alumni, students and salon professionals to join together and meet others from across the nation. The over 350 in attendance were presented with new techniques from platform artists, business expertise and strategies to renew their passion and recharge their salon businesses.

The runway presentation showcasing the “History of Hair” featured 40 models, as well as an appearance from “Michael Jackson” performing “Thriller.” Afterwards there was a gala graduation ceremony for the Class of 2015, at which 80 students and 12 student educators were presented with their graduation trophies. MODERN SALON Publisher Steve Reiss delivered the commencement speech, reinforcing that the salon industry is constantly growing and presenting endless opportunities in both business and beauty. Three students were recognized for outstanding performance: Kerry Johnson received the ‘Above and Beyond’ award, Gladys Rodriguez was presented with the “Spirit of Life” award and Rena Fonville was the Class of 2015’s valedictorian.

The conference offered over 45 breakout classes, including technical classes that covered topics like foil highlighting techniques, relaxers, men’s haircutting and bridal hairstyling.

“People come to these classes for their affordable low cost and our great topics,” President John Amico, Jr. says. “Everyone is immersed in our culture and sees the sincere level of care we have to our curriculum to help everyone succeed as individuals and as salon business owners in their beauty careers.”

The John Amico School of Hair Design is celebrating its 50th year and John Amico Haircare is in its 53rd year of business. They offer ongoing monthly free classes in Chicago, a leadership conference once a year, a haircolor conference and regional events, as well as their two largest events, Chicago, Chicago and their annual Supernatural Salon Cruise. On February 7, 2016 they will be going to the Caribbean with such educators as Geno Stampora, Paul DiGrigoli and Larry Oskin.

Additionally, John Amico Haircare has just debuted their newest color line, BioVita Shine, with an ammonia-free and PPD-free formulation.
