Tips on Building and Inspiring the Right Salon Team from Paul Mitchell's Business rEvolution

Anne Moratto | August 14, 2016 | 2:16 PM
Terri Cowan on how salon owners can get everyone to want to work. By creating an energy, an excitement in the salon environment.

Paul Mitchell’s Business rEvolution 2016 features business programs for salons and stylists, offering them on-point learning for an ever-shifting landscape. The rEvolution is underway in Las Vegas at the Aria Resort. In a series of break-out sessions, industry educators and coaches speak on best practices and challenge attendees to look at what they’re doing now, and make it better.  As Robert Cromeans, Global Artistic Director for Paul Mitchell, says,” I’m allergic to average.”

In a session about “The Right Team”—how to assemble, inspire and lead one—Terri and Steve Cowan of Professional Salon Concepts and the CEO of Millenium, John Harms, shared the stage and asked salon professionals to examine their operations.  “We want you to think about why you’re doing what you’re doing.  Why beauty?” says Steve Cowan.

Other salient talking points included:

The greatest way to get people to work is to create an energy that pulls them in.  What’s your favorite day to work in the salon? Saturday, right?  And why? Because it’s busy, it’s poppin’, there is an excitement to it. –Terri Cowan

The will must be greater than the skill. –Terri Cowan

Become a talent scout at the school in your area.  Become a household name to them.  Go get that talent.—Steve Cowan

You have to find opportunities to surprise and delight your guests.  Take something they already love, like a shampoo or a foot massage during a pedicure, and allow it to be a longer service that you charge more for. –Terri Cowan

Don’t be a taxi driver in an Uber world.  Don’t sit back and be complacent. Sometimes success breed apathy. When you feel successful, that the time to listen twice as hard and keep changing it up. –John Harms
