Melissa Lovett, owner and lead colorist of Platinum Hair Salon in Caldwell, Idaho, is “extremely passionate about the artistic part of color," she says.

"What better way to  express my creative side then doing it through the art of hair color.” MODERN reached out to Lovett after seeing her impressive makeover on Instagram (@hairbymelissa208). “I absolutely LOVE what I do, not just for the color part, but because of how I can change how someone feels about herself in a positive way,” she says.

GET THE COLOR

“This client, a previous level 2, let her hair grow out while pregnant," Lovett says. "This makeover was achieved in one session.”

STEP 1: Heavy foil the hair using Matrix V Lites with 30 volume developer. Foils are placed back to back in slices with color going from just off the root to line of demarkation. Do not leave any hair out in between.

STEP 2: Return to each foil several times to make sure to keep the product moist. Apply color to the root for the 30 minutes.

STEP 3: Lift to pale yellow. Shampoo, condition and dry the hair.

STEP 4: Apply toner throughout the hair using Joico Chrome V9.

When asked why she applies the color in foils, Lovett adds "You get more even saturation and less overlapping when you put hair in foil plus it keeps the heat in when hair is in foil. It does take longer to do this technique but you get better results."
