Wella Professionals Global Creative Director, Color, Josh Wood, is one of the most powerful and influential artists in the industry today. A salon owner (he owns multiple in and around London), the trend setting colorist is best known for sun kissed, wearable and money making finishes. Wood creates beautiful hair for multiple celebrities and his work has appeared in dozens of magazines and on the runways of top designers including Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs.

MODERN caught up with him recently at the International Trend Vision Awards (ITVA) in Barcelona, Spain, and learned Wood earns 1000 pounds - approximately $1250 - an HOUR (not a client) on his haircolor services in the salon. We asked for his tips on how all salon pros can up their skill set not only to increase their income, but ultimately to develop their craft.

His five tips:

-TRAINING: Take as much training as possible. “Expose yourself to different training courses. Expand your knowledge.”

-EXPOSE YOURSELF: Expose yourself to different cultures and learn from them.

-DEFINE YOUR PASSION: Learn who you are and build on that. “Define your passion and run with it.”

-TRAVEL:  “Make sure to carve out some time to visit a museum and see art.”

-PUSH YOURSELF: “Challenge yourself – don’t wait to be challenged.”

Part of that challenge, according to Wood, is to enter competitions, like Wella Professionals Trend Vision. “These competitions only work when people try. Enter. If you don’t get through, try again. I do think they give people a platform for their careers like nothing else.”
