Intercoiffure member Tony Odisho, owner of Exsalonce in Chicago, reports on the takeaways from Intercoiffure America-Canada Fall Atelier 2017 about growing your business this year:

• THE TEAM. Salon owners would be wise to consider what’s important to the new generation of hairdressers, who reject “this is how we do things because this is how they’ve always been done.” Instead of offering all services, working the traditional Tuesday-Saturday schedule and attending in-salon training, Tony Odisho today’s stylists may prefer to specialize, devise a flexible schedule, check out online instruction and rely on positive feedback and Instagram likes.

• RETAIL. “Consumers are always on the hunt for what has the best reviews, what’s on trend and how to get the best deal,” Odisho says. Thinking like a retailer means identifying the client’s need, highlighting specific items in your displays, sharing clients’ feedback and using key words such as “favorites,” and “bestsellers”

•THE CLIENT. Your guests seek simplicity and quick gratification. They’re well-informed of what’s on trend. Focus on making an emotional connection. Listen to the client, value her and make her feel special.
