After graduating from the first barbering program at Paul Mitchell the School in Costa Mesa, California, Rochelle Randall assisted a Paul Mitchell educator for six months before opening her own John Paul Mitchell Systems Focus Salon, Popular Movement, as a Sola Salon Suite five years ago.

She typically works from her suite Wednesday to Saturday, and reserves off-time for photoshoots and destination travel for wedding parties. She specializes in both men’s grooming and up-styling, so is truly full service.

MODERN SALON asked her recently about how she stays connected and informed through such a busy schedule and varied professional passions:

MODERN SALON: Why did you choose the solo route?

Rochelle Randall: I can create an atmosphere that is more personal. I select products I like to sell, and am able to create my own schedule, which has given me the freedom to travel the world.

MS: Why JPMS? How does the brand support you as a solo artist?

RR: I fell in love with the products, techniques, and the Paul Mitchell culture when I was in school. I love that the company supports me as an individual hairstylist. I have an amazing Business Development Coordinator with JPMS, who is the person who has helped me stay connected with systems and upcoming information. I feel encouraged, equipped, educated and ready to show and tell my guests we have to offer.

MS: How do you balance and prioritize education?

RR: I attend every Paul Mitchell event I can—local and national. The Gathering is my favorite, as it allows me to choose electives specific to my needs. Paul Mitchell also offers online education so I can watch new techniques at the click of a mouse.

MS: How do you find new clients?

RR: My main form of marketing is word-of-mouth and referrals, but Instagram helps, too. I post every day, showing new techniques and up-to-date fashion looks. I also post from events and photoshoots, so guests see I am always furthering my education.

MS: What do you see for yourself in 5 years?

RR: I want a bigger location that will allow me to have a photo shoot studio, a barbershop lounge, a washhouse experience, all while still keeping the private feel.

MS: What advice would you give to others who are thinking about going solo?

RR: Plan everything you would need to do financially. Make sure you budget. Remember each client you see is important. Each person is a walking advertisement.
