The change in season can trigger a change in hair color for clients. We asked our SOLO Artist Advisory Council, a panel of industry experts who lend their voice to important topics for independent stylists their opinion on “How can solo artists—and all artists—help clients for transition color from winter to spring?”

“Clients embrace the changing seasons and are ready for a change. Quick add-on services can generate new income for both the novice stylist still building a clientele and the seasoned stylist with a full schedule. Some of my favorite color transitions have been the simplest. Change from winter to spring is particularly fun and exciting for both you and your clients. It’s a great way to shake off the winter doldrums, keep your clients’ styles and colors current and keep them coming back.”—Lori Brooks, Framesi North America Design Group Member

“A change of weather always calls for a refresh of style. With the help of Color Craft by Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Color, stylists can increase color service and Take Home revenue while they boost blondes, pump up brunettes and radiate those reds. Color Craft is comprised of Liquid Color Concentrate (available in eight shades) and Custom Color Treatment, which mix together to create an assortment of unique color formulas for enhancing, intensifying, correcting, repigmentation or adjusting the tonality of your guests’ hair. Then send guests home with a personal bottle of their matching color care to enhance shine and extend vibrancy between salon visits. Talk about a win-win!”—Robert Cromeans, Global Artistic and Business director, John Paul Mitchell Systems

“One of the really great things about the change in season is that hair color can also transition right along with it. Allowing the hair to fade to its lightest is a great way to create the perfect palette for spring. Painting natural pieces around the front of the hair with Blondes Unlimited and along the ends will give the hair a soft, natural look but still shows contrast allowing the hair to continue getting lighter so that it is ready for fun in the sun during summer months.” Evelyn Ayala, Education Manager, Kadus Professional

“For those clients who have been wearing the platinum or ashy blonde colors they will start to soften their tones with a warm honey blonde. With Pantone's color of the year being ‘Ultra Violet’, we will also see many violet shades requested in the salon. This is going to be the hot new shade for springtime for those clients who aren't afraid of standing out. Clients who went darker in winter to give their hair a break they will come in requesting caramel ombre highlights to soften up their look. This is a great low maintenance color to offer those clients who don't want a huge color commitment but do want to warm up their complexion.” —Stephanie Polansky, global director of education and shows, Sexy Hair

“In 2017 smoky browns, winter gray and icy blondes were amazing color trends for winter. A great way to transition your client’s hair from winter to spring is to add a sensational color pop. Using the Dipped Ends (Dip Dye) method with a trending color pop such as lavender or green will keep your client looking sassy and sexy for spring 2018. Use the CHI ChromaShine colors to transform their looks from sleek to chic!” —Lisa Marie Garcia, president of Innovation, Farouk Systems

“As always, a thorough consultation with your client is a must. Taking in consideration, the client’s skin tone, complexion, and eye level, helps to create the perfect color palette. The client’s hair cut will determine the color technique. Lastly, discussing the client’s financial commitment to maintaining the new hair color is necessary.” –Tammy Feltner, regional education director, TIGI Americas

“I always tell my clients that seasons themselves have their own colors and tones. We all know in the winter things cool off, and I usually feel like color reflects that. Let’s do a cool brown or blonde! And as the seasons warm up, we start that warm tone transition. Once the winter is over, it’s time to start switching it up to a nice warm tone in the spring! It doesn’t stop there either, a golden beach blonde in the summer, and a rich cinnamon tone in the fall, all perfect transitions for the seasons.” —Ricardo Santiago, global artist, Joico
