Salon: MakeupByFrances, Visalia, California

Specialty: I WAS best known for my wild makeup posts (hence the makeup part) but now, after receiving my cosmetology license, I am best known for my vibrant hair colors and curls.

Most viral post: My most viral post would have to be my cabernet-color lob that went everywhere this year. My wine-colored transformations always do really well on the internet. The color itself was so rich and vibrant, plus my client has amazing, strong, shiny hair to help it look fantastic. The photo was eye-catching and it was reposted everywhere.

Favorite apps: Snapseed for minimal editing, I want my photos to look like they did in person so I try my best to spend minimal time editing hair pics.

Favorite hashtags: #modernsalon #framar

I follow: @shannonrha because of the awesome tutorials she has, @jacobkhan for the great videos and silliness from his team, @bescene because he’s the OG for metallics and he’s all about his team, @christinakreitel because she has great posts about how she’s balancing salon and personal life which is a struggle for me so she’s inspiring and super silly, and @caitlinfordhair because she’s got some cool style man; Originality is just oozing through her Insta page.

Pro tips: First make sure the style looks good in person, with clean ends and a non-distracting or clashing background. Find something that makes your page pop and stand out from the rest. Hashtag things that are relevant to what it is your trying to achieve—be it more people in your chair or branching out to companies for more online sponsorships—I can always tell when someone posts something and doesn’t have a purpose.

Hidden beauty talent: Believe it or not, people don’t realize I do makeup too! So, I’d have to say the hidden talent would be how I do people’s brows. I also get compliments on the way I make people’s skin look so even and bright.

Hidden talent: I was a softball pitcher from age eight to 19.

How social media changed my life: It changed my life by giving me a space to express myself when I was young and had no real confidence yet. I put myself out there artistically for the world to judge and I started to get lots of positive feedback, along with some negative. It taught me not everyone’s going to like your stuff, and that’s OK. Now, it’s opened so many doors for me that I never thought it would. I had no plans for life just a young mom, playing with makeup in my one-bedroom apartment, zero dollars in the bank, no car, no cell phone, stolen internet from my neighbor, and an iPod.

The first time I was featured on MODERN’s Insta: I want to say it was 5 years ago. It was an easy appointment and I had thrown some warm purple Pravana color all over her bayalage. We smoothed it out and got an awesome photo.
