What happens when a client goes a little too far with her highlights? In this case, it caused her to become washed out and then go back and over-darken the sections underneath. Plus it made the dark-with-grey regrowth look particularly rough.

Luckily, Clairol Celebrity Color Artist Jennifer J (clients include January Jones, Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett), has a secret weapon for cases like this—Clairol Liquicolor Permanente. “Liquicolor is seamless and easy to use,” she explains. “It won’t shift the color, and it allows me to retouch and blend over-highlighted hair in less than an hour.”

See how Jennifer J creates prettier, softer, more flattering highlights with grey coverage in no time flat.

Jennifer’s Color Correction Tips:

  1. Start the retouch with a large brush—liquid color allows you to work in larger sections because it glides on so easily. It’s possible to get through a single process application in five minutes.
  2. Start on the root—that’s where you need the most coverage.
  3. Leave the hairline until last. That prevents over-coloring this area or bleeding. When you’re ready to do the hairline, feather the color in delicately with a smaller brush.
  4. When all the color has been applied, go back through each section and feather the color down a bit to further blur the line of demarcation.
