Finding the perfect accessory for your bridal styles is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Updo expert and Artist Connective member Heather Schmick (@heatherhairandbridalstylist) shares how to pick the perfect one for both brides and your Instagram content.

"Finding the perfect hair accessory is like finding the perfect pair of shoes to match your outfit," Schmick says. "You want the hair accessory to complement the updo without taking away from it."

On a mannequin head, for practice or for her feed, she lets her creative energy soar. She will usually have a few looks she is wanting to experiment with, and then venture out to pick out adornments. This means going to grab some flowers, or go to the craft store to seek inspiration. Schmick says beads, cloth ribbon, fabrics and whatever sparks inspiration is fair game.

On the other hand, when it comes to bridal updos for her clients, Schmick's approach is different.

"When brides ask me for my advice on a hair accessory, I start by looking at a picture of their dress then ask what type of feel they are going for--modern, boho, classic, rustic..." Schmick says. "Once the bride and I are on same page regarding her vision of her wedding, then we talk about hair and what type of hair accessory would complement it!"

Schmick has been loving halo hair accessories from BHLDN, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie's sister wedding store.

"Whether its an updo for inspiration or for a bridal client, remember to pick something out the conveys the overall feeling you/they are wanting to portray," Schmick says. "And, always complement the hair!"
