When we posted this close-up of Dotty Hurtado’s (@hairbydotty) client on Instagram, thousands were in agreement that this seamless blend was oh-so beautiful.  We asked Hurtado, the co-owner of Prismatic Hair Studio in San Antonio and a balayage and foilyage specialist, to share her steps and formula.  Here, she walks us through her process.

 Client starting level: 6/7

Technique: Heavy full highlights with baby lights around the face frame. Root shadow and gloss.

Step 1: Section hair into 4 quadrants.

Step 2: Starting in the back right quadrant, begin foiling at an angle following her natural hair line, so when she pulls her up she will see bright blonde. Weave should be tighter not leaving too much of her natural color in between.

Step 3:  After finishing the whole back section, section out the face frame section for the baby lights. Switch your developer at this time to a lower one. Create your face-framing highlights as thick or bold as your client desires.

Step 4: After finishing the baby lights bump up your developer for the remaining partial highlight.

Step 5:  Let process until you reach a pale light blonde, wash with Unite purple shampoo.

Step 6: Mix your root shadow Demi-permanent color and begin the root tap starting in the back and working your way to the front at an angle for a more natural look, apply gloss on remainder of hair. Let process for 15-20min.

Step 7: Rinse out with Unite Blonda Daily Conditioner.

Step 8: Spray Unite 7 Seconds Detangler, apply your favorite hair styling products and blow it out!
