Only about 2% of the global population is sporting red hair. According to www.medicaldaily.com, "redheads may be harder to sedate than blondes or brunettes, and require more anesthesia during surgery. In a 2004 study, redhead patients required 20 to 30 percent more anesthetic than other women to reach the same level of sedation. The same experiment was also replicated with mice, which found animals with a MC1R mutation also required more sedation. Researchers suspect because the gene belongs to the family group of genes that play a role in pain, the mutation causes redheads to be more sensitive to it. The genetic mutation could affect the activity of endorphins, known as the body's natural painkillers, which may lead to an increase in pain."
