Festie Besties: Announcing the Making Waves Finalists

Shannon Demont colored the hair by deepening regrowth and blending it down, followed by balayaging it. To style, she curled the entire head with a 1” curling iron away from the face, leaving out the ends. She created two bubble braids, then pulled them each out individually to make them look fuller and thicker. This style was topped off with a headband and two long hair pins with flowers on the end, inserted up into the bubble braid.

Alicia Webb created a root smudge on a partial highlight. She created an infinity braid, slowly adding in more hair to create a half up half down look. She added multiple fishtail braids and pulled them out, then waved hair with a flat iron, leaving out the ends for a beachy look.

Shelby Weatherholtz focused on different textures and making the braid multi-dimensional, some bloused out and others being sleek and smooth. She created 4 different braids (pretzel/Dutch/rope/fishtail) and changed the whole look by pinning in the area by the neck for an edgier faux ponytail. She added some fun “hardwear” accessories to make it the ultimate festival vibe! Fun fact: Minus deep waving the bottom of her hair this is a heat free style!

Summer Evans created this color with teasy lights and a root smudge. She blewdry the hair straight and curled it with 1” curling iron. She teased hair into a pony tail then took two braids on each side, pulling to make the braid softer, crossing it over the other! She finished with glitter for a pop of fun.

Kayluh Stewart balayaged, then toned all over. She then mixed three pastel hues to blend with the blonde. To create a seamless blend, she melted conditioner into the ends tones, while also teasing each section for seamless blends. To style, Stewart sprayed with texture spray for curls and formed a destructed 3 strand infinity braid while making sure to pull out the pops of colors incorporated into the braid! For a more boho vibe, she added silver rings and finished with an all-over glitter spray.

MODERN SALON’s Making Waves contest celebrates summer hair color and styles. Think: trips to the beach, summer concerts and a night out at a street festival. These looks from the top-five finalists certainly scream summertime vibes.

After narrowing countless entries to the Making Waves contest down to 10 semifinalists, we asked the 10 talented stylists to create their best style on sun-kissed, balayage-perfect hair. Our panel of judges— Trae Howard @traehowardhair, Amy Baugh @hairbyamybee, Marissa Sue Madsen @hairbymarissasue, Megan Moran @megahairmaniac, and Frances Canola @frances_hairartist—and editors picked their five favorites!

The top-five finalists will have an AMAZING challenge box shipped to them with the products and tools they’ll need to complete their final challenge, courtesy of Z.One Milk_Shake. Using at least two products from the challenge box, finalists must create their best-in-boho submission.

On July 23, public voting opens for the final five contestants! Vote for your favorite looks by 11:59 p.m. CST on August 5. Our grand-prize winner will be announced August 6!
