Sport Clips, the nationwide salon group specializing in hair care for men and boys, reached its goal of opening its 1,000th store by the end of 2012. The milestone was achieved with the opening of the store in Springboro, Ohio. Sport Clips, which is observing its 20th year in business, has stores in 42 states and plans to open 225 locations in 2013.

“When we started franchising Sport Clips in November 1995 with only one company store, we could only dream of reaching 100 locations, much less 1,000,” says Sport Clips Founder and CEO Gordon Logan. “Now I joke and tell people I knew we’d get here, I just didn’t think it would take this long. Very few franchises or brands or any type reach this major milestone. It’s an affirmation of all the hard work by our support team, area developers, team leaders (franchisees), store managers, stylists and other team members that has gone into making Sport Clips the success it has become over the years.”

The company began in Texas and grew throughout the Midwest and Southeast for its first 10 years before expanding to the West Coast and later to the Northeast in 2011. According to Logan, the company focused on not growing any faster than it took to develop the infrastructure needed to support its team and provide the best client experience.

Logan attributes the success of Sport Clips to the philosophy espoused by legendary football coach Lou Holtz: “Do Your Best. Do What’s Right. Treat Others the Way They Want to be Treated.” Holtz has given his permission for Sport Clips to use these words as its foundation. The company also has extensive professional training and support systems in place.

“Having a solid track record has always been a higher priority to us than growth for growth’s sake. We looked at Springboro for a location several years ago, but decided at the time the market was not yet large enough,” says Logan.

Before the opening of the 1,000th store, Sport Clips sponsored a “Win a Grand” promotion asking participants to select the city they predicted would be the location of the landmark location. The winner,  Brent Kuhlman of Mason, Ohio, a regular Sport Clips client, was chosen in a random drawing. Visit sportclips.com.
