Style, Glamour and Offset Looks at the 2013 Golden Globes
The 2013 Golden Globes took a step back towards old Hollywood style, bringing a high sense of glamour to what is generally known as the most fun awards night of the season. This year, quirkiness was replaced with sensible style and simplicity that any salon guest could feel comfortable wearing stepping out of our chairs for their big nights.
Off-Set, The Long and Short Of It
From the first looks on the red carpet it was clear that the side swept, sexy, romantic look was going to rule the night. Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Adams, Megan Fox (and on and on) were all styled with sexy Veronica Lake (Jessica Rabbit for those under 40) soft, sculpted, polished waves that cascaded over one shoulder while being styled close and sleek to the head on the other. This isn't the ‘run your fingers through my hair’ looks that we've seen in the past, this was picture perfect hair perfectly suited for photographs that will last a lifetime. The side swept hair wasn't just for long hair, Amy Adams showed a more mid-length version that worked beautifully, while Lena Dunham and Anne Hathaway proved that even our short hair guests can adopt the essence of this trend with a side part and focus on polish and not texture.
So, what do we need to recreate these trends for our guests behind our chairs? First, we need to brush up (pardon the pun) on our styling techniques, and second, we need products. For many of us this type of styling is new, it's not flat ironed and you do need hair sprays, which again for many of us are something that has not been used for 20 years. To create these looks, you can’t be afraid of products and you have to know how to use them. Start by preparing hair with FREESHAPE hot flex spray heat-activated shaping and hold from KMS California to protect hair during a volume-oriented blow dry and a curling iron set. Then, it's all about the polished finish created with a Mason Pierson type brush and a hairspray like Goldwell StyleSign Big Finish micro-fine hairspray for strong hold and all-day volume. Finally the glamour and shine, here’s the big secret, you need a waterless spray-on serum like Goldwell StyleSign Sleek Perfection for a polish that will last all night long without the frizzy results from a water based product.
On The Dark Side
The other big trend last night was darker hair, from Salma Hayek to Paul Rudd, Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lopez, Megan Fox and even Jodie Foster, these stars were not shine bright, their hues were slightly deeper and much more guest friendly. Even Jessica Chastain’s red was just red enough, but not too red that it screamed, “look at me,” and Julia Roberts illustrated that you don't always have to be red to look hot.
What I love about this trend is, for me as a colorist and for our guests, these looks are perfectly suited for the flexibility of a demi-permanent color. Whether it’s adding depth, creating that glamorous shine, enhancing the tone with a natural red, blending a few grays or covering a bunch, Goldwell Colorance hair color is the one acidic pH demi-permanent color that will keep your guests hair right on trend and in amazing condition…so they’re ready for when you evolve them to the next hot trend.
