Note From the Editor: Ripple Effect

I just re-watched the 2000 film Pay it Forward on a cross-country flight. And in between waves of ugly crying watching a young Haley Joel Osmont try to change the world, I was re-inspired at the overarching theme of how small actions can add up to big impact.

Each December, this year-end recap column gets more challenging to write. The world is a complicated, messy place. And these realities influence our actions, mood and interactions on a daily basis.

The painful headlines and devastation comes at a time when we’re preparing to celebrate the season and spread joy. In the salon, at the busiest time of the year—and always—try to focus on what you do best. Help people leave your chair feeling better than when they walked in. Go the extra mile for guests and coworkers to make them feel good, especially at a time when it can be challenging to feel optimistic.

Creating a supportive and encouraging environment has a ripple effect on team culture and morale. Be proud of your profession; very few careers allow you to spread happiness and joy to people every day. And be proud of your community—the beauty industry is so generous, giving and collaborative.

Throughout these pages, you’ll see highlights from this year’s most-liked content shared with us on Instagram, to the industry’s most-loved hashtags to 2017’s most popular trends.

We close this tough year by extending our deepest gratitude for making all of MODERN SALON’s platforms so beautiful, engaging and vibrant. It’s the work, talent and collaboration you sharing with us every day that continues to fuel our passion.
