EDITOR'S NOTE:

As this issue goes to press, our team is celebrating the milestone of hitting one million followers on Instagram—thank you!—and reflecting on the strong connections made at our recent Salon Digital Summit event in Los Angeles.

This event, which focused on the art of social and digital success, was all about expanding your reach on every platform. One of the speakers who resonated most was Olivia Smalley, @omgartistry, an expert at social media for salon professionals, and a member of the CosmoProf Artistic team, who shared her intel both on the mainstage and in a breakout classroom.

Olivia talked about not just “doing social,” but “being social,” and how to tap into digital tools to help build your brand beyond followers. The most important element? Making meaningful connections online that translate to real life—be it current and prospective clientele, inspiring and like-minded stylists, brands you want to work with, or educators and editors (ahem) you want to stay connected with.

Instagram has been an incredible tool for us to stay in touch with, learn from and share with our industry—and foster real relationships that reignite industry passion. Look at this issue, for example—we met Sydney Ann Lopez through social media and now her work is on our cover!

While at Salon Digital Summit, we got the chance to spend time with Lopez, and other industry friends, through our Artist Connective: a program that recognizes top talent and helps connect stylists with the industry at large. It was so inspiring to hear her story, and stories from the Connective, about how getting her work featured on our page helped put her on the map.

You will continue to see this talent featured in MODERN SALON magazine, on our websites and across our social pages. If you want your work noticed, make sure you’re tagging us at #modernsalon and feel free to slide your best work into my Direct Messages @alisonalhamed.

“If you want comments, if you want likes, if you want followers, be the per-son you want to meet on Instagram,” Smalley once shared with us. “Reach out to people, tell them you love their work—if you’re thinking it in your head, write it. It’s important to have those online cheerleaders to help with your engagement, and you help theirs as well.”

We want to take a moment to thank YOU for being a part OUR success story. Each day we are more and more inspired because of you and your willingness to share your work with us. We open 2019 by extending our deepest gratitude for making our @modernsalon Instagram page such a beautiful place to explore.
