Note From the Editor: A Bright Future

We can’t help but have our sights set on the future in today’s world. And though you don’t want to miss out on the moment you’re living in because you’re planning for what’s coming up, thinking ahead isn’t a bad thing. In this issue of MODERN SALON Career Handbook, we hope to help your career in the short- and long-term.

If you’re a MODERN SALON fan, this magazine might look a bit familiar—previously it was called FIRST CHAIR and published in three smaller issues throughout the year. We’ve moved to a bigger, annual publication—an idea we took from the literal pages of our sister publication, NAILS Career Handbook—to pack more valuable information into one issue that you can find ideas and inspiration from all year long.

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas to report on the Miss USA pageant, which was sponsored by CHI Hair Care. MODERN Associate Editor Jamie Newman joined me, and we were able to connect with two very talented women in the industry, Larisa Love and Olivia Smalley. You might know them by their Instagram handles, @larisadoll and @omgaristry.

We went to dinner one night and found ourselves talking a lot about the future and how Larisa and Olivia created success for themselves. Larisa decided early in her career that she would have a salon before she was 30, and just this year, she made that a reality (you can read more about Larisa’s journey on page 20).
Olivia keeps a notebook full of personal, professional and travel aspirations. She says having them in writing makes them more real for her, and there are many schools of thought that indicate goal-setting and visualization can aid in attaining what you want.

Today, you can go to trade shows and events around the country (p. 32) and see Larisa and Olivia educating on color, trends, and social media onstage. And if you think aspiring to make a name for yourself the way they have is daunting, flip through these pages and start making a plan.

First, what path do you see yourself on? Specializing in a specific niche of the industry has proved to be
fulfilling for many (p. 66), so consider narrowing your beauty focus to master a particular skill set. Prepare
yourself for interviews (p. 26) and the often confusing realm of finances (p. 28) if you’re just getting started in your career, and no matter what stage you’re at, our First Skills section (p. 42) has a plethora of pointers to help you advance.

Stay connected with MODERN SALON along the way (p. 80), and we’ll do our best to aid in your success—present and future. I’ll leave you with this, a pep talk from Olivia that got us all thinking at dinner in Vegas: If there’s something that you feel is holding you back—a hardship, toxic relationship, or other challenge—let it go. The moment you stop finding reasons why you can’t do something is when you find you can do it after all.
