In the past year, driven by both fashion and function, the HAIR+ category—hair replacement, trichology, extensions and hair enhancements—has grown in leaps and bounds. Part of it is certainly that the topic of hair loss is becoming destigmatized; social media seems to have played a positive role in helping people speak up about challenges they face.

MODERN SALON officially established itself in this crucial category in 2016 with the first HAIR+ supplement as well as the inaugural HAIR+ Summit in Atlanta, which brought together industry pros, salon owners and distributors from across the country and around the globe. The September 2017 Summit saw an increase in attendees—nearly 300—which was a tangible sign of expansion.

Celebrity influence is helping spread the word, too. In 2016, former Chicago Bears player Brian Urlacher, famously bald, received a follicular unit extraction transplant and popped up on televisions and on billboards with a full head of hair. Glee actress Naya Rivera partnered with Nioxin in April 2017 as a celebrity brand ambassador after she suffered from post-partum hair loss.

When faced with an aging clientele and what feels like an uptick in autoimmune issues where hair loss is symptomatic, the beauty industry is taking notice, and seeking more information and solutions. And it’s hard to ignore when Time publishes an article indicating that scientists have discovered what cells cause hair to turn gray or go bald (in mice, at least).

Luckily, technology has come a long way: lasers, supplements, transplants and hair systems are more effective and provide more natural-looking results than ever. Extensions, wigs and hair pieces have shifted from taboo hair-loss camouflagers to fashion statements and solutions to achieving hair goals.

The hair-enhancement category is only going to continue growing. With an aging population, a range of medical and hormonal challenges, a variety of new products and technologies, and an increased interest for on-demand hair-enhancement solutions, there’s a greater need than ever for salon professionals to understand hair loss and hair enhancement—and how to provide the expertise and direction to best service clients.

New shades, lengths, textures and designs in the extension world allow salon professionals to take their clients. from okay to wow in just one sitting. Using extensions, additions and pieces to create fresh, exciting looks for clients allows salon professionals to grow their business as both hair-fashion and hair-loss solution experts.

As it can be hard to keep a finger on the pulse of this fast-moving segment, MODERN established
the HAIR+ by MODERN SALON private Facebook group as a way to connect stylists, owners and physicians in order to problem-solve, learn, and create conversations and connections.

The 2018 HAIR+ Summit will be in Atlanta, September 23-25 at the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia.
